Dear Families,
February 24, 2017
Gung Hay Fat Choy! I hope you all had a wonderful time at the Chinese Potluck Dinner. The multi-purpose room looked beautiful and so did the children! I hope you enjoyed the singing and all the delicious food. Thank you for your contributions. It was wonderful and a great way for the students to celebrate all they have learned about Chinese New Year with their families and friends! We were able to learn many different things about Chinese New Year in a fun and memorable way. The month of March is now quickly approaching.During the month of March, we will be focusing on rhyming and word families. One way we do this is emerging ourselves into Dr. Seuss books! We are very excited to be going on a fieldtrip to the VETS auditorium in Providence on March 22nd. We will see a production of the Teacher from the Black Lagoon and other children’s books. This is a first time field trip for us here at Melrose School! We will be leaving around 8:45 am and returning around 12:30 pm. I will send home a notice of the cost in the next week. Due to the fact that we had to purchase group tickets in advance I can only bring 2 chaperones. Let me know if you are interested in coming and if I get more than two names I think I will put all the names in a hat and pick two lucky winners!!
During the month of March we will read and rhyme throughout the month. Dr. Seuss has so many wonderful books for children to enjoy and remember for a lifetime!
We have been incorporating Splash Math and Lexia into our day by alternating groups of three students to go on the kindles during rest time. They seem to be enjoying this enrichment of math and literacy skills.
In math we practiced writing and counting to ten in Chinese and we continue to practice with subtraction. The use of manipulatives is very important when learning this concept in kindergarten. Continue to practice at home with snacks or legos or small toys that you may have at home.
In Makerspace, Miss Haley helped the students construct a slope and a ramp to understand motion, gravity, cause and effect and to show an example of the meaning of push and pull of an object . Last week, we constructed a ramp in the snow to see if we could get a object to follow the slope, which they succeeded in doing.
The students are making great progress with their writing and are becoming very proficient with their sight words we have been practicing. Keep up the great work.
It looks like the warmer weather is making its way to Jamestown . Enjoy your weekend! Thank you so much for your support this week especially and as always throughout the year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. MacIntyre
