Dear families,

 We had a great week here in K-3. The children are working hard on some Native American crafts. I am in need of large brown paper grocery bags so I can send all the crafts home safely on Tuesday. If you have any could you please send them in with your child this Monday? Thank you in advance.

 The children are showing a high interest in The First Thanksgiving, so we have read some wonderful literature and have had some great discussions comparing the differences between Thanksgiving then and now. Hopefully, they will be able to share some of this with you at home.

In Writer’s Workshop, the children are being introduced to more wall words, spacing and punctuation. They are doing a great job.

I am also discussing a lot about syllables. Your child should be able to tell you how many syllables are in their first and last name and also be able to add them together. Wow! They are very proud!

 Miss Kathy Brownell came and delivered the items that were brought in from home and the items we bought at McQuades and brought them to be made into Thanksgiving baskets. The items that are not used will be donated to the Jamestown Food Bank. Thank you parents for helping out with this, what a wonderful lesson for your children to learn, that no matter how small they are, they truly can make a difference.

Our letter of the week was “Ll”. Our tongue twister was, “Larry and Linda lick lemon lollipops.”

 Next week, our letter of the week will be “Uu”

In math, we have been practicing number writing. We are taking our time and practicing our number 0-20.  This takes time and practice. I am not in a hurry, we have plenty of time and it will come when your child is ready. We will continue with 2-D and 3-D shapes and adding within 5.

As you know it is getting cold out. Please send your child with hat and gloves. If your child wears rain boots or snow boots to school, be sure to send in a pair of sneakers that they can wear inside, especially if it is a “P.E.” day.

Thank you to all of you for coming in for Parent /Teacher conferences. Your support and trust means so much to me. I feel lucky to work in such an amazing community and to be a part of your child’s first year of school is a gift. Please know that I am here early every morning. If you ever have any questions or concerns you are welcome to come in and talk with me.

It was hard for us to say good bye to Nicholas and Alexander Sipperly and Rhea Dupre this week. We wish them the best on their new adventures and with their families.

I won’t write a newsletter next week so, I would like to take the time now to wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with your families.

Dear families,

The children are very excited about our Native American Unit. We have learned about the origin of the 1^st Thanksgiving and some history of the Pilgrims and the Mayflower. We have also learned Native American legends that the children love. We are working on making drums, pattern necklaces and headbands and vests. The children also each gave themselves Native American names this week, if you ask them what their name is they should be able to tell you. Our letter of the week was “Kk” .Our tongue twister was “Kendall and Kiana kick like kangaroos.”

We will be going to McQuades on Wednesday, November 19^th. . If you have not sent in your labeled bag of coins and permission slip yet please do so. Thank you in advance. The children are so excited to go and so am I. It is a great lesson in doing for others and is very meaningful especially at this time of year. Also, please remember to send in a non-perishable food item for our K-3 Food basket. I will be taking donations until next Friday November 21^st.I am looking forward to meeting with all of you next week for our parent teacher conferences. Thanks for taking the time to come in to talk about your child with me.

Dear families,

This week, we began our Native American unit. We began by reading literature about Plymouth Plantation and what life was like for the children back then. Everyone had a job to do even as young children. We also read learned and discussed how Pilgrims and Native Americans became friends and how the First Thanksgiving came to be right in our neighboring Massachusetts.

I hope you had a nice day off for Election Day. I was happy to hear that many of the students were able to tell me who was running for governor and who the winner was.

In Writer’s Workshop, we are encouraging the children to work independently and sound out words. They are doing a great job. Their goal is to match their writing to their picture. They are using their alphabet cards to help them in their writing. Our letter of the week was “Hh”. Our tongue twister was “Hannah hugs Harry the happy hound.” We also brainstormed a list of H words.

In Math, the children have been working on writing numerals in order from 0-5. We have also been practicing number recognition 0-20 as well as sorting geometrical shapes. The children are becoming very good at identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, please continue to practice these skills with your child at home.

We are planning a trip to McQuades sometime in November to purchase items for the Food Bank in Jamestown.  I am tentatively planning the trip for Wednesday the 19^th. I am attaching a permission slip with an open date in case I have to change it due to the weather. If you could send in a bag of coins for your child to buy a food item I would appreciate it. I do not need more than $2.00 maximum for each child. Before we go to McQuades, we will use a flyer to see how much the items cost and each child will have a shopping list with one item to buy. This way, they know what they looking for and buying when they get there. There will be more details to follow, as the trip gets closer. It is a great way to get the children involved in the community. I am really only in need of one volunteer at this point to help with the fieldtrip. Some fieldtrips are fine for younger siblings to come along with but in this case it does not usually work. I really encourage the students to purchase the product and carry it back to school themselves t just seems to make it more meaningful.

In the meantime, if you would like to send in a non-perishable food item for o our K-3 food basket, I will be giving it to Kathy Brownell to donate to the Jamestown Food Bank. Thank you so much!

Dear Families,

Happy Halloween! The children had fun this week creating some spooky decorations which we connected with math by creating 3-Dimensional ghosts and symmetrical jack-o-lanterns and symmetrical bats.

I want to thank all of you who were able to help out on our walk to the Jamestown Fire Station. I appreciated your time. The children had a really nice visit. I hope you were able to talk with your child about the importance of fire safety. It is important that your family have a meeting place somewhere outside your home in case of fire. Thank you in advance.

Our letter of the week was “Mm”. Our tongue twister was “Marcus and Michelle munch marshmallows.”

The class has been practicing coughing in their “cough spot”. They are all going to be receiving a tattoo today to bring home for doing a great job. The video should be up and running on the kindergarten website sometime next week.

On Monday, we will be starting 4^th grade buddies. They will come down to our classroom and read to their buddy for about 15 minutes every Monday.

In November, we will begin our unit on Native Americans. I have a feeling November is going to go by fast!!  As the weather gets cooler, please remember to label hats, coats and mittens with your child’s name on it. This way they can be returned to you if they are left outside or on the play ground.

I sent home a book order yesterday. I find that it is much easier to order on-line. The code is on the front of the Book order, if you can do that that would be great. It is a Holiday edition, I will get the books to you discretely if they are gifts, just let me know.Thanks!

REMEMBER THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4^TH DUE TO ELECTION DAY!

Dear families,

I can’t believe we are heading in to our last full week of October. The children are enjoying our fall unit. We have learned about the season of fall including foliage, apples, pumpkins and harvest as well as fire safety.

In Writer’s Workshop, the children continue to make individual strides. Please remember, all children develop different skills at different times. Some children may be writing words, while others are learning letters. What is important is that they are all progressing at their own pace, as they begin the writing process. I praise children for working their hardest and trusting their selves in what they know about letters and sounds, this is the way to become an independent writer

In Math, we introduced addition and the children did an amazing job!  They enjoy picture addition so much. Practice adding at home using cheerios, raisins or grapes. Anything your child likes. We also talked about 3-Dimensional and 2-D shapes. Vocabulary you can use at home would be 2_D is flat and 3-D is solid. Have your child sort for you at home!

Our letter of the week was “Nn”. Our tongue twister was “Nick and Natasha nibble nuts.”

I want to thank all of you who sent in Box Tops for K-3. I think I told you last year K-3 won and we earned an awesome scavenger hunt! Keep up the great work!

I sent home the blankets on Thursday because there were confirmed lice down the hall in 2^nd grade. I was being proactive and getting things out a day early to be safe. You may send in a beach towel ONLY on Monday. Please put it in a separate bag other than your child’s back pack so it can stay inside of it during the day. Please do not send in fluffy blankets, pillows or stuffed animals. Send in a couple of books in the bag also. Thank you so much in advance!

The first week of November, we will be starting 4^th grade buddies. We will partner with Mrs. Geary’s 4^th graders. They will come down once a week for about 20 minutes to read with their buddy. It is a great way to get to know the “big kids” in our school. Both 4^th graders and Kindergarteners look forward to it!

As I prepare this newsletter at 7:30 am on Friday morning, I am hoping that the rain will stop so we can go on our Fire station  fieldtrip… time will tell…

If there is something you are particularly concerned about or have questions about please feel free to e-mail me. I would be happy to talk with you in advance. I will be sending you a date and time reminder next week for when you are scheduled to come in.
