Dear Families,
March 28, 206

I hope  you all had a Happy Easter! I did not send a newsletter home last week because we had no school on Friday. The students had fun coloring an egg and making a container to bring it home in.
We finished up all of our letter of the alphabet. So there will be no more tongue twisters. We will begin making words and writing sentences in the morning with all the letters we know now!
We are working with recognizing vowels and how they make the syllables in words. The students are already counting the vowels in their names.. Ask them about it they know so much already!
In writing, the students are doing a great job writing poems and describing foods they like through poetry. They are very creative and really enjoy reading their writing to their classmates.
In math, we are working on showing different ways to make the same number, for example..”show me two different ways to make the number 8 using two different colors.” We are also working on solving number stories that involve addition and subtraction and are even writing our own number stories if we are up for the challenge.
We will begin this week or the beginning of next week with a new science unit involving worms.
We are done observing and studying our goldfish and guppies.
Is anyone interested in adopting Rainbow and Sparkles (our goldfish)
Or our 3 guppies?
You would have to have your own tank because I have to return the containers we have been using in class. Please e-mail me if you are interested and we can plan a time for you to pick them up! Thank you in advance.. We can split them up if more than one of you are interested.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
I hope you all have a nice week and that we see the warm sun soon!!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear Families,
March 18, 2016

I am sure you heard all about the shenanigans that went on here in K-3 yesterday. We had a mischievous leprechaun that came into our classroom. The students were on the lookout for him all day, we think we heard him but we never saw him….
We were very lucky to have Kathy Brownell come in and gather all the kindergarten classrooms together. She told us some Irish folktales and sang some beautiful music with different instruments as well. She also read a poem to us that including our class. She is very talented and kind to come in and treat us to such a great time. Thank you Miss Kathy!
We continue to work on poetry and rhyming words. The students are really enjoying learning about word families and are learning so many new words this month that they can sound out and incorporate into their daily writer’s workshop papers.
We are also working very hard in our science journals. We are comparing our goldfish to our guppies through observation. The students are excited to make connections in this unit with what they already know about fish!
In math, we are learning about shapes and comparing ones that are alike and ones that are different, this ties into our science unit of comparing alike and different very nicely.
Our letter of the week was “Ii”. Our tongue twister was, “ Isaac and Iris like ice cubes and ice cream.”
Reading week was a great success and congratulations to all of the students for reading nightly and keeping track of your minutes. You all did a great job and it is so nice to see you excited about reading! Keep it up!
I would like to thank all the parents and community members and athletes for coming in and reading to our class. It really makes it special for students to see adults enjoying a good book.

If you were not able to come in and you would like to, please let me know and I would be happy to arrange that with you.
I hope you all have a good weekend and I really hope that I see you all on Monday…..
I heard that there is a chance of………. snow!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear Families,
March 11, 2016

We had a nice week here in K-3. We are welcoming the warmer weather and getting very excited to welcome spring on March 20th! It looks like it is well on it’s way. The class is really enjoying learning about our new fish. Part of our science and reading program has lessons that teach students where fish live and to learn and be able to name areas of water that are salt water and areas of water that are fresh water that fish can live in. To introduce this concept, last week, I showed the students a short clip of scuba divers in the Great Barrier Reef, which is where my son was.  This week we read from our science book and learned that ponds , lakes, streams, and our goldfish tank are freshwater and oceans, marshes and some fish tanks are salt water. When we had a small assessment yesterday to see if they could draw and sort examples of areas of water are fresh or salt, for example pond and ocean, I was so impressed when some drew and sounded out the word Great Barrier Reef to list under salt water!! They definitely surprise me every day! It would be great if you have extra time this weekend to walk or drive around Jamestown and look for areas of water like marshes, oceans and ponds.. they are so interested in it and we certainly have the best island to explore!
Our letter of the week was “Aa.” Our tongue twister was, “Aime and Asia ate apricots. “
The students worked on writing poems about animals this week and read them aloud to the class. They did a fantastic job.
In math we revisited addition and even added 3 digits. Next week we will be working on 2-D and 3-D shapes.
If you are able to come in sometime next week to read, that is great. If time does not allow for all of you to come in, we can definitely schedule it at a later date. It can be a little overwhelming to have all the parents come in at one time anyway so I am happy to schedule you all in at your convenience.
I cannot believe we have 63 days of school left! Not that I am counting them down… it is part of our curriculum to count the number of days of school! Let’s enjoy these months we have left together and celebrate all that we have learned and are still learning, not just academically, but about each other. It is a wonderful class!
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear families,
March 4, 2016

Happy March! It is so exciting to see that spring is only 17 days away! It appears we have lucked out with what is so far the warmest winter on record for Rhode Island! I am speaking for myself since I am not a fan of winter… sorry for those of you who love the snow and the cold!
The students are diving right into Dr. Seuss with great enthusiasm. I think if time allowed I could read all day and the students would be happy. It is so great to see them so excited about reading, this is what makes Dr. Seuss the most loved children’s author of all times.
We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Wednesday, March 2nd. We learned that he was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904 and he passed away on September 24, 1991 at the age of 87. We also learned his real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.
Throughout the month, we will be reading many of his books. I have a lot here in class but if your child has a favorite that they would like to bring in please feel free to do so.
Our letter of the week was, “Ss.” Our tongue twister was, “ Suzanne and Sammy sail at the seashore.”
In Writer’s Workshop, we read poetry and created our own poems about animals using describing words. We wrote about how the animal looks and how it moves. The students are enjoying poetry and are doing a nice job writing their own.
In science, we diagramed our fish and labeled the different parts. We will be comparing goldfish to guppies in the coming weeks.
In math, we practiced subtraction with goldfish manipulatives and goldfish tanks that we made. The students did a nice job showing their work and writing an equation to match. They are making great progress with subtraction. Continue to practice at home to reinforce this skill with your child.
If you are not returning your child’s reading bag, would you please do so. If you have misplaced it can you please let me know and I can make a new one. It is important to return the books every 2 to 3 days so I can pass them onto another student. Thank you in advance.
I hope you all have a nice weekend!
Thank you also for the glue stick donations, I am in great shape now!
Sincerely,

Mrs.MacIntyre
