Dear Families,
November 4, 2016
EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! CHECK OUT K-# IN THE JAMESTOWN PRESS THIS WEEK! - from scarecrows to fire safety… we are in the news!! Great job K-3!

Happy November! I hope you all had a Happy Halloween. I know the students were very excited! For those of you who were able to attend the Scarecrow festival at Godena Farm you enjoyed a real treat! The entire school did such a wonderful job creating scarecrows. It is so nice to see everyone working together and enjoying the event. I was so sorry I was not able to attend as it was my daughter’s Homecoming dance that night!
We had a great time with the Jamestown Fire Department. They let  us use the hose, climb aboard the fire truck and the rescue and taught us many important fire safety skills. We are lucky to live in such a wonderful community where people take time out of their busy schedules to welcome us. K-3 wrote thank you notes to the Jamestown fire station. This writing ties nicely into our new month of November as we will about Thanksgiving, Native Americans and Pilgrims. I am using Thanksgiving to also talk about what it looks like to be thankful and how much the words “thank you” mean when they are said to others. I have also introduced the period, question mark, comma and quotation mark.. The students love recognizing these punctuation marks.
In honor of Thanksgiving, we will be collecting canned goods for the Jamestown Food Bank here in K-3. You may start sending your canned and boxed food items at any time. We will also be walking to McQuades on November 20th to buy a food item for Thanksgiving Baskets to be donated to families in need.
I ask that you have your child do some chores around the house to earn $1.00 to $2.00 to spend at the grocery store. Your child can use coins to pay. He or she will not need more than $2.00 at the most!!
Please send the coins in a labeled bag with the amount and your child’s name on the bag. We will be cutting out items from the McQuades flyer. Each student will be responsible for finding and buying a specific item to put into the Thanksgiving basket. They will even be responsible for carrying it back to school! I think this gives the student a real feeling of helping others and it is important for them to know that even though the are small they can help others.

I have sent home conference reminder times. Please let me know if you will not be able to make your conference. Also please remember the conference time is only 15 minutes long. It is a time for you to ask me any questions you may have about your child. If we find that you need more time, we can set up another time to meet. I am happy to do that.
In other news, out letter of the week was, “Mm.” Our tongue twister was, “Marcus and Michelle munch marshmallows.” In writer’s workshop the students are beginning to respond to prompts, answer independently and are learning about proper punctuation. I hope you enjoyed the October writing folders that I sent home. You can see how your child is growing already!
In math, we continued with addition within 5 and are also working on 2D and 3D shapes and writing our numerals 0-10.
In science, we are observing leaves and are learning new vocabulary to describe how leaves are the same and different. Trees and weather has been a very exciting science unit especially given all of the changes that are taking place right outside our window.

I am looking forward to meeting with all of you next Monday and Tuesday. Please remember there is
NO SCHOOL on Tuesday November 8th for Election Day and on Friday November 11th  in honor of Veterans Day.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear families,

Just a quick note on this short week. Our walking trip to McQuades
will be Friday, November 20th. Please send in a labeled bag of coins with your child totalling no more than $2.00.
I also am collecting canned and boxed items for the local food bank, you can send in items from now until Thanksgiving.

Your child may bring their beach towel in for rest time starting Monday, November 14th. It MUST come in a bag separate from their backpack. Please DO NOT send in any stuffed animals. Your child may bring a couple of books or a small notepad and pencil in their bag. Thank you so much for your cooperation. This is to keep K-3 happy and healthy.

I am looking forward to meeting with you all on the 14th and 15th for our conference. I know that we will only have a short amount of time to talk , the conferences are scheduled for 20 minutes one after the other, if we run out of time, please know that I am here every morning by 7:15 and would be happy to meet with any of you to continue our conference at your convenience.
Thank you!

The students did a wonderful job. Thank you to everyone for sending in fabric! You can see our scarecrow displayed at the Harvest Festival
                                Saturday October 29th
                      from : 4:00-7:00 pm
This event features scarecrows made by Melrose School students.
There will be tractor pulls, campfire, maze and refreshments!!
                              Please come by
GODENA FARM 892 NORTH MAIN ROAD JAMESTOWN
I will be posting a picture of K-3 and their scarecrow on my blog in case you can’t make the event.

Tomorrow morning the students will be treated to a visit by the Jamestown Fire Department. We will learn about fire safety and have a tour of the fire truck. Due to the construction taking place at the Fire station, we can not walk down to visit so they have offered to come to us! Thank you Jamestown Fire Department!
In other news, our letter of the week was “Nn”. Our tongue twister was “Nick and Natasha nibble nuts.”
In Writer’s Workshop, the students are working hard. We are writing about things we like about ourselves, our families and things we can do. Students are encouraged to take their time and do their best work every day. Every student is able to tell a story whether it is through a detailed picture , word or a short sentence. Keep up the great work kiddos!
In math, we focused on 2D and 3D shapes. You could work on this at home by finding things around your home that are flat versus things that are solid. Names we are working on for 3D shapes are sphere, cone, cube, rectangular prism and cylinder.
On a final note…. Halloween is Monday!! I will have some fun activities planned for the class but we will keep it low key so they have enough energy left to go trick or treating!!
Have a wonderful weekend and a Happy Halloween!!!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear families,

We had some beautiful weather this week here in Jamestown. Thanks to our trees and weather unit, I have been taking advantage of the weather and taking the class out to look at our adopted trees and collect data on the changes that are taking place. If you go to the Jamestown Melrose School website and click on kindergarten then click Mrs. MacIntyre you will be able to view my blog. All of my newsletter as well as some recent pictures are on there.
Our letter of the week was “Rr”. Our tongue twister was,”Ralph and Ramona rest and read.” Writer’s Workshop is going well as we continue to write the sounds we hear and not worry about perfect spelling. This is a skill that is important to as it promotes phonemic awareness and the confidence to become an independent writer.
In math, we continued to practice addition within five, and even wrote our own number stories. Addition practice can be done at home using snacks like goldfish, cheerios, grapes, raisins…. Anything at all!!
Next week will be an exciting week with Halloween right around the corner. We will be working on our scarecrow. Thank you all for sending fabric in! I will send home details about the event at Godena Farm featuring the scarecrows made by the entire school.
October is Fire Safety month, in recognition of that, we will be visited by the Jamestown Fire Department with one of their firetrucks on Friday, October 28th at 9:00am in the morning.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear Families,
October 7,... The Wizard of Oz | by ...2016
Once again participating in a Scarecrow event to be held at Godena Farm in Jamestown. Each classroom is creating a scarecrow for the farm. This year the theme is pollinators.  K-3 will be creating a large flower. I am asking if each student could please send in 2 pieces of 12x12 material that will be used for their petal. It can be any kind of fabric and any pattern that your child wants. I thought you might have time over the long weekend to pick up the fabric.. It could also come from an old pillowcase or fabric you may have around the house.
The project is a lot of fun! The students are able to view all of the scarecrows at the Godena Farm Scarecrow Night which will be help on October 27th. There will be refreshments, a bonfire and hayrides.
Details to follow…..

Have a great weekend,

Dear Families,
October 14, 2016
I hope you all had a nice long weekend. Since this was such a short week, this is just a quick note to let you know how our week went.
We are enjoying our Trees and Weather Unit very much. We went on a leaf hunt and collected 5 different types of leaves. The students made leaf rubbings with the leaves they collected. We have been reading a lot about the cycle of apple trees, Today, we tasted Granny Smith, Red delicious, Yellow delicious and McIntosh Ask your child which one was their favorite!
Our letter of the week was “Bb.” Our tongue twister was, “Brianna and Ben bounce beach balls.”
In Writer’s Workshop, we tried writing one short sentence with a period at the end of the sentence. We brainstormed a list of things that are red and wrote about one of them and did the same with the color orange the following day. The student’s also wrote about things that are round after reading a book about shapes.
In math we learned about 2- Dimensional and 3- Dimensional shapes. We were able to notice the difference and name the shapes. Practice this at home or in the grocery store where you can find lots of 3- Dimensional shapes.
If you have not sent your child’s fabric in for the class scarecrow please send it in soon!! I want to thank you for your cooperation in keeping your child home when they are ill..it is greatly appreciated and very considerate of you.
Thank you so much in advance.
Have a nice weekend,
Sincerely,
Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear Families,

I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful Autumn weather. We had a nice week here in K-3. Right now we are digging right into our Trees and Weather unit and the students are really enjoying watching the changes in the trees right outside our window. You may notice your child paying special attention to trees or even naming different parts of a tree. Enjoy and encourage this with them!
Our letter of the week was “Pp”. Our tongue twister was “Pat and Paul pick pickles and peppers.” I hope that you enjoyed reading your child’s September writing. I will send a folder home at the end of each month.I will also be keeping one writing sample from each month in a folder here at school. At the end of the year you will get the folder and you will be amazed at the growth your child makes!
This week, the students brainstormed ideas of things that are red. They drew and wrote about something that is red and read their work aloud to their classmates. Well done!
In math, we  counted, named and graphed pattern blocks. We also identified and matched numbers and continued practice in our Go Math workbooks. You may have noticed your child will be getting math homework every Wednesday night, that is our homework night, in case I haven’t mentioned that.
We are reading lots of literature about trees, apples and pumpkins.
We read my favorite Eric Carle book, Walter the Baker .We tasted pretzels and made our own out of play dough. I have attached a recipe in case you have some free time to make some. The students were very excited about the story of Walter the pretzel maker! Next week, we will taste different apples and graph our favorite.
I will try to take the class outside to look at the trees throughout the fall. I know it may seem hard to know how to dress your child in the morning. Layering works best. Our classroom is pretty comfortable: not too hot or cold. Having a sweatshirt to wear outside is important and please if you haven’t already LABEL the sweatshirts and hats, they get left outside a lot. Thank you in advance!!
Remember there is no school on Monday in honor of Columbus Day and  I hope that you all enjoy the long weekend!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

 Dear families,
September 30, 2016

I can’t believe it is the last day of September! Time sure flies. The class has come a long way in just one month. We are still getting used to our schedules but I think everyone feels comfortable and happy now so everything else falls into place once that is established.
This week our letter of the week was “Dd”. Our tongue twister was “David and Dominique dance with Dalmations.”
We began journaling in our Science Notebooks. We are observing and taking data on trees and leaves. We “adopted” three trees on our playground. We named them; Mr. Maple, Mr. Oak and Mr. Green…. I suspect you can imagine why. We we be observing and recording how they change throughout the year. We also classified them as a Conifer or Hardwood. The students are already enjoying this science unit.
In math, we are practicing our writing our numerals 0-5 and we are working with shapes.(including the hexagon!) The students are tracing and counting shapes and objects. You can do this at home for extra practice if you have time.
In our Writer’s Workshop, we worked with our Being a Writer program and read wrote about things we are able to do now, things we would like to be able to do and what we would like to be when we grow up. I have encouraged the children to “write a story” through a detailed drawing if they are not ready for letters and words yet. I want them to enjoy writing and not worry about spelling!
In October, we will read a lot of books about autumn, pumpkins and foliage. We will also learn about fire safety and visit the Jamestown Fire Station.
Thank you all for the donations of tissues and Lysol wipes. I will definitely put them to good use! Remember to send sneakers on Tuesday and Wednesday if your child does not wear them to school. It is important that they have them for P.E.
Enjoy your weekend. Keep sending in those awesome signs of autumn!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear Families,
September 23,2016
We had a nice full week of school here in K-3. It is nice getting into the routine of things and all of the students seem to be adjusting very well. We have begun our Unit Study of Eric Carle. We will read many books by Mr. Carle, paying particular attention to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We are learning about sequence and days of the week from this book and the students made their own hungry caterpillars to hang in the classroom. We also read some books by other authors this week. We read Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom, Chrysanthemum,Wemberly Worried and The Kissing Hand. Many of the students seemed familiar with these. It is nice to see the class enjoying read alouds so much, especially since it is one of my favorite things to do with the class.
We are doing Writer’s Workshop everyday now. The students are doing well. I encourage them to use “good kid’s spelling”, and write the sounds they hear when they say a word, not worrying if it is right or wrong. When they draw a picture, I also encourage them to use five colors or more to add detail.
Our letter of the week was “Ee” and our tongue twister was: ”Elizabeth and Ethan eat eclairs.” No one in our class knew what an eclair was.. I explained it looked like a creme filled hot dog drizzled with chocolate, of course they all wanted to try one!
In math, we began writing our numbers 0-5 and we also practiced working in our Go Math workbooks.
We worked hard on getting our classroom ready for Open House. We have only been in school for 11 days so I think the students did a fabulous job! I thank you for coming and if you were not able to make it that’s no problem, I look forward to meeting with you all at conference time. Thanks for taking the time to come in.
We will be beginning our Trees and Weather unit. We will be observing and collecting data on different types of trees and how they change throughout the year.
We also celebrated the first day of autumn which was Thursday, September 22nd! I love autumn in New England and look forward to exploring nature with the students during this beautiful season.
I hope your child is enjoying kindergarten and please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have any concerns.
Have a nice weekend. If anyone sees any signs of autumn outside in nature this weekend, your child is welcome to bring them into school and we will put them on our Autumn table it is looking great already!
Thank you to Bramble for bringing in her caterpillars to share with the class, one was wrapped in a cocoon and the students loved seeing it!
Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre

Dear families,

I am excited that we made it through our first week of school! I know it is a lot to get used to and I wonder if your children are coming home exhausted? It has been very warm and rainy all week, I am hoping next week brings sunny, cooler weather for us.
Next week we will begin a little bit more of a regular schedule
The students will begin to get used to the daily schedule and the consistency of it.
There are certain things we do everyday. We have morning meeting, which involves calendar, weather, counting, phonics, reading, science and speaking and listening skills all together. It is probably one of the best and most informal learning environments of the day! The students love it. We also have read alouds, writer’s workshop and math everyday. These blocks of learning increase in time as the children are able.

I will be sending home your child’s rest bag today. Please remember to return it on Monday. Inside the bag there should be a beach towel, a couple of books and a small stuffed animal if they like. I prefer if they bring their own books rather that use the ones from the class library only because they end up getting up and down trying to switch books and don’t get much rest… thank you in advance!
The students are doing very well with snack and lunch, let me know if you have any questions about that. We have NO peanut allergies in my class. The students are welcome to bring peanut products for snacktime.
I will write newsletters every Friday and I will upload them to my blog on the Jamestown School website.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Mrs. MacIntyre
