Dear families,
March 4, 2016

Happy March! It is so exciting to see that spring is only 17 days away! It appears we have lucked out with what is so far the warmest winter on record for Rhode Island! I am speaking for myself since I am not a fan of winter… sorry for those of you who love the snow and the cold!
The students are diving right into Dr. Seuss with great enthusiasm. I think if time allowed I could read all day and the students would be happy. It is so great to see them so excited about reading, this is what makes Dr. Seuss the most loved children’s author of all times.
We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Wednesday, March 2nd. We learned that he was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904 and he passed away on September 24, 1991 at the age of 87. We also learned his real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.
Throughout the month, we will be reading many of his books. I have a lot here in class but if your child has a favorite that they would like to bring in please feel free to do so.
Our letter of the week was, “Ss.” Our tongue twister was, “ Suzanne and Sammy sail at the seashore.”
In Writer’s Workshop, we read poetry and created our own poems about animals using describing words. We wrote about how the animal looks and how it moves. The students are enjoying poetry and are doing a nice job writing their own.
In science, we diagramed our fish and labeled the different parts. We will be comparing goldfish to guppies in the coming weeks.
In math, we practiced subtraction with goldfish manipulatives and goldfish tanks that we made. The students did a nice job showing their work and writing an equation to match. They are making great progress with subtraction. Continue to practice at home to reinforce this skill with your child.
If you are not returning your child’s reading bag, would you please do so. If you have misplaced it can you please let me know and I can make a new one. It is important to return the books every 2 to 3 days so I can pass them onto another student. Thank you in advance.
I hope you all have a nice weekend!
Thank you also for the glue stick donations, I am in great shape now!
Sincerely,

Mrs.MacIntyre
